Hurray for no TV! I'm working on five years. That plot line sounds akin to a story on NPR involving the testing your friends to see who has the highest level of testosterone. I think a girl won.

I wonder if you're referring to the riveting episode of "This American Life" a few weeks ago when they tested the testosterone levels of everyone involved with the show. It was a great episode.
I admire anyone who's chucked the TV for 5 years. I don't miss it. (OK, I kinda miss "Cops.") There is just too much to read and write and do for me to stare slack-jawed at the latest episode of whatever. I also don't feel like being bombarded with ads. I just finished writing an article on passenger pigeons and I'm reading a good bio of H. L. Mencken. Patrick: are you a reader? If so, may I ask what you're reading now?--just curious.

I went a few years teevee-free, but have been back at it for a while now. Recently I even got a TiVo, so now I can cherry-pick the few good programs out there and fast-forward triple-fast thru all the commercials. So my viewing is now much more efficient. The Daily Show, PBS News Hour, Six Feet Under, BBC's Weakest Link, Dem convention coverage, Queer Eye, quality films, etc. I read plenty of books and blogs as well. Currently working on Howard Zinn's _People's History of the US_.

I don't miss TV either, I can't believe how much people talk about it. I'd rather eat lunch alone at work than listen to someone babble about some irrelevant tv program. I do read - right now Brewed In America, I am teaching a class about beer this fall. Also of late I have been writing songs / music like some crazy person. Too much to do without spending an hour watching the tube. Did you see the rainbow Monday night? (That a real rainbow, not one on TV...)

It's the no-TV thread, finally, yay! Hi Andy, welcome to the blog! I have heard TiVo is a huge time-saver and ad-banisher and well worth it. Is that snippy woman still hosting "Weakest Link"? I hear lots of good things @ "The Daily Show," mostly about how it's more informative @ world events than most news programs. At any rate, I bet the book is good. As you doubtless know there's a Howard Zinn-related discussion board online. If I remember right, he's one of the thinkers interviewed in the film "The Corporation," (now playing at the State) which sounds very interesting indeed.
Patrick: shoot, I missed the rainbow (the rainbow will not be televised). Last one I saw was about a month ago. I will guess that you went to the Beer Fest--was it fun? I love good beer, especially the dark ones. I had a lovely Bock not too long ago that was so good--miles and worlds away from mainstream American beer.
...funny that the TV-free Amish will not be able to watch their daughters and sons on the new show "Amish In The City." Next of course they're going to do "L.A. Brats in Lancaster, Penn." Or in Michigan's Thumb, for that matter.

Yes I did make it to the beer fest, and what a fest it was. It wasn't all about a bunch of drunks but there was plenty of that too. If you like bock look for an Alt hard to find but great flavors. I used to live near Lancaster, don't letthe Amish fool you. Rumor was the Amish girls worked at the strip clubs (they were the ones with the dirty feet)

Thank you for the recommendation, Patrick--I'll keep an eye out for an Alt. The beer fest sounded to me like the ultimate in a laid-back, fun summer event with the chance to try a lot of interesting microbrews that you might never taste otherwise.
The idea of an Amish girl at a strip club is a tad hard to process...

These "reality shows" are getting more and more ridiculous. Which is why I avoid watching them and am horrified by the previews for most of them. I don't think I could ever give up TV entirely though, because I do like watching certain sports on the tube when I can't be at games in person. I do wish that more women's basketball (especially U of Michigan and the Detroit Shock) were on TV.
