I take it you've made a donation to the Aaron Elandt Scholarship Fund?

Was Sgt. Elandt the EMU student who died in Iraq? Wonder how many Michigan soldiers have been wounded in Iraq / Afgahnistan?

Not only did the flags not lower for the lad, many flags continue at half-staff for Mister Reagan. Also have been aghast at lack of daily updates on national TV about US military death toll. Heard nothing for a while until toll hit 900, and then it was not front page news.

Remember when we were warned of the dangers of "Psychological Habituation to War" during the Vietnam foray?

Leighton, the very fact that you are asking whether Sgt. Elandt was an EMU student and asking about casualty numbers, and the fact that I knew nothing @ the memorial fund, shows me the priority this story had in the media. And Raymond, I too noticed the lack of coverage of passing the 900 number--in fact, I learned about it from your blog!

Welcome to the blog, Mark! I wonder if Lansing by virtue of being the capitol is more tuned in to the Granholm December half-staff order--at any rate, good.

I think they're a little behind on flag-lowering. The UMich planning department's building manager forwards around the facilities list e-mails, which include flag-lowerings: on July 21 (wednesday), Gov. Granholm ordered flags lowered on July 22 for Specialist Craig Stuart Frank of Lincoln Park and on July 23 for Sergeant 1st Class David A. Hartman of Akron, both killed in Iraq on July 17. I suspect that Sgt. Elandt will get a flag-lowering early next week. From what I can tell on the UM facilities list, the Governor does order flags lowered to half-mast for all Michigan servicemembers killed on active duty, and does so in such a way that each of them gets his or her very own day of flag-lowering. If people are still(!) holding flags at half-mast for Mr. Reagan, that's their own thing.

Actually Aaron died on May 30th 2004, and the governor did order flags to be lowered for him. Aaron was a great person and will never be forgotten.
