I plyed this game before: There once was an artifact so rare and precious that the archivists insisted it could never be exposed to light. It lasted forever but nobody ever got to see it. Who was right, who was wrong?

What kind of binding would a book like this have had in 1460?

Laura, Do you have a name or contact (or email address) for the curator of the exhibit? As a UM alumnus (RC '93, Rackham, '00), I'd like to make my feelings about this known. It would be good if others who felt strongly did the same. Anna

Thanks for comments, everyone. Patrick: there is that conundrum with fragile old works. I'm just a layman, but it seems to me that in the puzzle you propose, they could expose it to light just long enough to photograph the whole thing so as to make a facsimile, the negative consequence of (brief) exposure to light weighed against the worth of sharing a beautiful work widely via a repro.
addiann, I tried to look this up using a few different search strings, but it seems that the information on the web focuses on book cover decoration, not the actual assemblage of a book. But I can ask the curator this question on Monday.
Anna, I was so glad I'm not the only person who feels this way. I'll find out the curator info on Monday. I also need to find out a bit more about the work: perhaps it was severely damaged when they got it & so it was to some degree a reasonable decision to remove the illustrations. I also need to find out where in the chain of command the illustrations were removed--I'm almost entirely sure it was under U-M's aegis, but I darn better make sure of that. Information is missing here, and I wouldn't want anyone making calls due to info I provide when for some flukish reason it turns out to have been a)somehow not U-M's fault or b)a reasonable decision. So I'll check on Mon. and post here what I find out.

Preservation vs. Use.... such a quandry. Seriously, woudn't you want to see the real thing, not a twentieth century copy of it? In the museum world where I work people always ask - Is that real? When its not real they get disappointed. I'm just playing devils advocate. I'd would loath to be the person that has to cut the book up (chop chop chop).

Laura - 2004-07-11 21:01:42
Well, as for me, I'd be perfectly happy seeing a repro if I knew that doing so would help protect the original from light, carbon dioxide, what have you. As for people who are disappointed to know that a perfect copy indistinguishable from the real thing is a copy, my personal reaction is "tough cookies!" I've never visited the Sistine Chapel, but I've certainly gloried in pictures of it.
I think it's really cool that you work in the museum world, Patrick. Any insider stories would be really interesting to read. I'd love to know the goings-on of that world.

What's the point of travelling if you can just look at pictures of places? Or going to museums? I used to feel the same way about St. Peter's until I went there.

Anna - 2004-07-12 08:27:55
A better analogy might be having to destroy a landscape in order for people to be able to travel there. Say, you had to fill in most of the Grand Canyon, or remove most of the vegetation and animals from one of the national parks. Say you had to destroy all but a very small section of the Great Wall in order for a few people to be able to walk on the remaining portion, instead of looking at it from below. Would you?

Eric - 2004-07-12 10:05:37
I disagree with your analogy because it doesn't sound like this manuscript cannot be seen unless it is destroyed. It's all speculation at this point anyway. I'd be surprised to find out that the manuscript is being destroyed in order to be displayed. Hopefully we'll learn the truth today.

I'd say a better anology would be Greenfield Village in Dearborn. Henry Ford rescued a lot of homes that were in a state of disrepair or impending destruction and brought them to his property so that they could be restored and admired. Is historic preservation better served in moving the Wright Brother's bicycle shop from Dayton to Michigan in order to save it?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Anna - 2004-07-12 11:28:54
Greenfield Village is a terrible analogy. As you say, the houses were in disrepair and would likely have been destroyed or fallen down of their own accord. If the illustrations were cut out of this work, assuming it served no preservation purpose, the work was destroyed by that act -- the precise opposite of Greenfield Village.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric - 2004-07-12 11:59:44
My analogy makes perfect sense provided the manuscript is not in good condition. It makes no sense if the manuscript is cut up for the sole purpose of displaying it.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Anna - 2004-07-12 16:11:33
Sorry -- "terrible" was a bit harsh. I agree: If the manuscript was literally going to fall apart by virtue of being opened, then making clean cuts is fine by me. Laura, I'll be interested in what you find out.

I am fascinated by the discussion here and thank you all for your comments so far. I put a call in to the curator, but she has not called back quite yet. I apologize for the delay in posting the information. I'll actually be at the UMMA tomorrow on other business, so, tomorrow at the latest. Pardon the delay please.

Patrick - 2004-07-12 17:46:54
Interesting discussion. To clarify- they probably will take the book apart in a manner which it can be put back together and nobody would notice any difference. Thats not that hard to do. The real goal is to take it apart so that many people, including you and I, may see it. It's about public access to the real thing and I think that can be a good thing.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Anna - 2004-07-13 09:36:46
Yikes! Ancient bindings are really valuable. There isn't such a thing as taking them apart in a harmless way. Totally tangential to the topic at hand, but... There was an excellent book that I read, a number of years ago, set in the Vatican after a flood. The heroine was a book binding restorer from New York who went to volunteer to try to preserve the ancient book bindings. In the process, she fell in love with an older Italian man. it was a *terrific* book and I'd like to read it again. Does this ring a bell with anyone? It was a NYT notable book. Laura, you'd probably love it, if you haven't read it already.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-07-14 20:04:42
It sure sounds like I would--I love stuff like that--if it's based on true facts. Good recommendation. Tried Googling it up but no luck.
OK, now, here's the latest on the book.
I called the curator on non-work time and left a message. She never called back. Next, I floated the idea of writing a story about this to my editor but he pointed out correctly that that wouldn't be in line with the type of stories we write. So here's the state of things: I can't really go further on this since the UMMA knows me and my editor has vetoed it. So I'll have to apologetically withdraw from this pursuit, with regret. However of course anyone is free to call the UMMA and dig into it, and I pray someone does. I apologize for leaving anyone hanging, and hope someone follows up on this bothersome question.
