Tangential to your note about "acceptable" plants--do you know of anybody in the area I can contact for help identifying and destroying invasive species? One of the co-ops appears to have a bamboo infestation...

The local natural-landscaping and native-species local group Wild Ones does lots of invasive-species removals, in Ann Arbor city parks. I don't know if they'd do such a removal on private land, but it's worth a shot. Contact people are Mike Appel at (734) 395-1060, appel(at)umich(dot)edu, and Susan Bryan at (734) 622-9997, susanbryanhsieh(at)yahoo(dot)com.

p.s. but bamboo is notoriously hard to rip out once it's established, and most varieties spread like wildfire via underground spreading roots. It'll likely be a multi-year project. When planting bamboo, most gardeners advise installing an underground dam of plastic around the plant to stop the root-spread.
I have bamboo in the backyard that I planted on a thin strip of land between a regularly-mowed area (lops off any ambitious new shoots) and a cliff (can't spread in that direction).
btw I'm flattered that you asked Murph; thanks!
