Did this guy do one good thing for the University? All I seem to remember of his tenure was the whole debacle around the new President's house. And the controversy around the new Student Union, which I don't think they really needed. There is the Rec/IM expansion, though, which is going to make the facility one of the best in the country.

I'm somewhat aghast at the volume of money now under the bridge--seems pretty wild for a small university.
When an EMU student I used to hang out all the time in the old Student Union food area in McKenny Union--that seemed more than adequate as far as a small university's student hangout area. Haven't seen the new one but am curious.

If I remember correctly, it's going to be located across from the Hill towers, which seems like the most counterintuitive place to have it-away from the share of the academic buildings. I don't quite see the need for a new Union, either, considering that 75% of the student body leaves town on the weekends and evenings. I also think the McKenny building is one of the nicer buildings on the old part of campus, and it's a good location.

All good points I think--the place is a ghost town on weekends. I always thought of it as a commuter school, with a lot of adult students (way more, proportionately, than U-M). And yes--who wants to hang out around the Hill Towers?

both the EMU Presidential Palace and the proposed Union were in the works before Pres Sam came. Sam has a reputation as an excellent fundraiser. i don't know what/how much he brought into EMU. Sam and Pam are charming people to hang with. i don't think he got a fair shake here. he's lucky to get out. maybe if McKenney Union still had the bowling alley in the basement instead of fastfood franchises upstairs he would have stayed.

thanks Raymond--there's always more to the story, so I'm glad to see some balancing info.

I heard that fundraising was up about 30% since the "house" was built, but I doubt it paid for the Palace.

I'm sure it did not; there were so many overruns. I'm still trying to figure out why his golden handshake is nearly 4 times U-M prez Mary Sue Coleman's salary.
