I wonder if the building is structurally sound.

The beauty of Depot Town is that most of the stores compliment each other. Some might complain that it's too cutesie, but Depot Town is a destination for shoppers. The same cannot be said for Downtown. With that in mind, a coffee shop would be nice. There is already a garden shop in Depot Town, so I would nix that idea. Another eatery would be nice. Take the rest and make them apartments/condos.

The only drawback is parking. As luck would have it, 107 E. Cross St. burned down after the owner lost his CofO. Level that, and viola! you have instant parking.

Tom raises a valid point since it's apparent even to Ypsidixit's layperson eye that there are major cracks running through the facade. I agree with Eric--a coffeeshop was one of the retails I was originally considering in my development plan. It would be nice to stop off there for a bit of java and socializing, mornings, en route to the bus stop. There is no garden shop in Depot Town. Ypsidixit has to go to Meijer's for her weekly purchase of 3 or 4 40-pound bags of mulch, not to mention plants.

Bird Brain is a garden shop. It's now open. It's next to Frenchie's which is next to the Sidetrack.

If you want to support Ypsi businesses, you can find all of your mulch and plant needs at Mantis Garden Supply.

I buy garden stuff from Congdon's, occasionally, but where is Mantis? I'm a heavy mulch consumer--Bird Brain doesn't carry cheap mulch.

Mantis is on W. Michigan Ave and has been for three years now. They also carry great pet supplies.

i'd like to see a theatrical lighting company on the south end and several antique stores on the north. the middle could host artist studios. the upper floors? scary. band and theater rehearsal space. oh, wait. the lighting business, the antique stores, and the art/work space were chased away.

I'll check it out Eric--thanks for the tip. Is it opposite the Kroger's out there? Raymond, that antique store that was housed in the north end of the ground floor of the Thompson Bldg. was apparently there illegally for some reason, I heard. At any rate. I'm curious to know why the owners are sitting on their hands instead of developing it.

West Michigan.

If you go to the Meijer via Ellsworth, then you pass Mantis on the way there and on the way back. It's right next to the AME church.

If it were up to me, I would put in a coffee shop, a book store, a pet supplies shop (nice idea!), an art gallery and...well your car idea is a pretty one...an auto supplies store. FWIW, I wouldnt mind a gardening place there or a dentist although I wouldnt really shop in either place. I have long wished that someone would renovate that block. I have always felt that there is a certain charm to that building even though it is falling down. I thought Barnes and Barnes was going to fix it up? Shows what I know. I only walk by it almost it every day. :)

Your ideas are good ones...there seems to be a universal call for a coffeeshop in the building. Dunno if Barnes & Barnes is still in control. Just wish they'd fix it up.

Been in that building. Lots of holes are in it. if you have about 3 million to spare it could be paradise. Mantis is great. I thought they were going out of business, but they just expanded to the East. Great pet supplies and local dairy / egg products as well.

Sounds great. It's on the list for next weekend. Thanks for directions Eric. Thanks for the shop-local tips. Meijer is a bit overwhelming anyways. Now, if they have goldfish I'm home free.
