A friend of mine who works for NPR says that Bob Edwards is miserable to work with and a prima donna (if prima donnas can exist in public radio). There was reportedly dancing in the streets when May 1st rolled around. Now Carl Cassel on the other hand is supposed be a big teddy bear.

The guy was a bit of a snoozer, and NPR listeners should quit acting like fuddy-duds. The show wanted to take a different direction, and as long as it doesn't dumb itself down, I don't see the big deal. Just my humble opinion.

I really miss Bob Edwards. I love his voice. I dont think he was a snoozer. But, I guess change is something that happens to radio and to its credit, NPR doesnt change as much as other radio. It is more stable. And now Bob Edwards has more time to go out on his book tour. It doesnt seem like this has hurt him at all.

Eric: funny you mention that, because on his appearance on Prairie HC yesterday he was really jumping his lines in a skit he did with Garrison...being rather over-dominating, to the point that Garrison actually asked him at one point, "You wanna tell this story?"
DaveD: It's true Bob E didn't set Morning Edition on fire, but just speaking for myself, that was just what I wanted in the a.m. when defogging brain with a cup of tea...someone soothing was just right for me at that point. I do however think it a bit shabby of NPR to cut him loose just 6 months shy of his 25th anniversary...I would have liked to see him at least reach that milestone & be honored for that.
Lynne: You're right, they're not totally overhauling M.E.--two other familiar veterans are going to do it. They did more or less completely overhaul Sound Money, however, and in an attempt to be edgy and hipper, it's actually just kind of shallower, with a somewhat unpleasant wiseacre tone and too many clever music samples & not as much solid money info as previously, IMHO. And on the Diane Rehm show last week (yes, I listen to NPR all day) it was clear that his feelings had been hurt and that he was "annoyed" to be cut loose before the anniversary. For what it's worth.
