My father used to hunt them in our basement and attic when we lived out in the sticks. Not afraid of people at all, and make good soup. Steve and I were camping with his sister in Ionia and thought we heard something in the bushes. I was afraid to look for fear of coming face to face with a man in an orange jumpsuit, but it was just a raccoon going through our bags. Didn't run away either.* * * * * * * * * * * * Laura - 2004-05-28 11:58:51 It's odd that, as a wild animal, a raccoon in the middle of the woods, even, isn't afraid of people at all...seems very counter-survival. My folks had a big noisy nest of them in their attic this past winter, had them trapped & released. While exploring a northwestern bit of the Waterloo Nature Area last summer, I found an odd correctional facility of some kind in the woods, one for juveniles if I remember right.
