Does anyone listen to Chemical Brothers anymore? Would anyone like to make music similar in funk to the Chem Bros? I would like to sing for you. I sing low. lol Are there any cute boys left in Ann Arbor? I'm looking for an intelligent, tall (about 6'1" ish) short very dark hair, pretty, edgy, comical, political, normal, kind - call me. Hey, you asked :-)

Perhaps someone can answer this one. I've started my first garden this spring. Due to space constraints, I'm doing a few things in pots -- mostly herbs. Thing is, they don't seem to be draining at all. Granted it's been rainy lately (here in Chicago, anyway) but I'd've thought I'd still need to water daily. The herbs are in standard flower boxes with a couple drainage holes. I even raised them up a little so the holes aren't flush with the holder underneath them. I've heard that lining the bottoms with gravel would be helpful. They're already planted, though, and I'd rather not re-transplant them. Any suggestions? Drill a few more holes perhaps? Thanks.

I love the Chemical Brothers. And I sing low, too. :) There are no cute boys left in Ann Arbor, although I haven't met AAIO yet, so mystery remains. Not that I'm interested. Just one of those unsolved X-Files-type questions. First City! Are your pots plastic or terra cotta? I ask because plastic pots retain lots of water--I've had the same problem that you describe. Terra cotta "breathes" and lets the plants drain more water. It's true that gravel would help, and this early in the season it won't hurt them to be transplanted. Please let me know--now I'm interested. And thanks for writing from Chicago! It's been awfully rainy here too...raining now, in fact. Thanks again.

and First City, good for you for starting a garden! As a fervent gardener, I just don't want you to get discouraged because of some early-season glitches. BTW, I started a pot of basil in April and it immediately died because it was too early, too cold, and I was rushing the season as usual. But I know that you can succeed!

I still listen to the Chemical Brothers. Have you tried Fishbone? As for the gardening -- my mother gave me a bunch of iris that for 2 or 3 years didn't bloom. I was getting ready to hack the clump apart out of frustration, when I looked, and lo and behold, there are like 15 stems with flowers about to bloom! Yay! My Siberian Iris are finally settled in, too -- the year before last they had one -- ONE! -- measly flower. Last year they got 2. This year there are 7 or 8! I think the moral of the story is that with iris of all variety, you have to let them settle in and not get impatient and replant them every year, even though I've been cautioned by gardening books to split them up and throw away the old tubers (or whatever they're called). As for the pots, yes, I would probably replant them. Herbs prefer to be Rather Dry, and it's not that big a deal to take them out and put in some gravel. You could try more holes, but then the soil might start to leak out. One thing that I like to do with big terracotta planters is to fill the bottom of the planter with foam peanuts, cover that with a very fine screen, cover with gravel (dirt would find its way through the screen, even if fine), then put in a layer of dirt before planting. That way the thing doesn't weigh 80 pounds when the soil is moist -- and the plants don't need more than 7-8 inches of soil usually, so filling all the way with soil is sort of a waste.

Any fellow Ypsilantians hear that weird warning siren that went off before the storm about 12:30 am? I've lived in Ypsi for 9 years and that's the first time I've ever heard it. I thought that was a Defcon 1 warning that a tornado or nuclear holocaust was at hand, and I started hoarding clothing and personal effects. Weird stuff.

Yes! I was curious about that too! But they didn't say a thing on the radio, so I was totally clueless as to whether to go in cellar/hightail it outta there/huddle under desk, &c. So I just kept blogging.

That was a Tornado Warning horn. It was loud enough to be heard in the Elbow Room while the bands was playing. There was a report of a tornado in Stockbridge heading our way at the time. Milan got the real one though. (Stupid Fact) Those Defcon horns used to be powered by Chrysler Diesel engines.

Thanks DaveD. We all just came back upstairs from a spontaneous evacuation to the tornado shelter when we saw those greeny-black skies rolling in...phew.

Same here. That was....scary. The sky became black as night here by the Medical Center, and it still looks pretty severe. Seems a bit early for this kind of weather.

Looking at the national weather map (click on one of the white crosses for the local picture) I see a number of other storms are marching towards us.

He would put down grass-green floor cloths. "A FORGOTTEN FAD: FLOOR CLOTHS. A similar type of floor covering is the floow cloth, which has designs painted on sturdy material. These were used in fine homes in France as far back as the 1300s...Early American settlers often painted tile-like patterns on their floor cloths. Thomas Jefferson had two grass-green floor cloths in his home in Monticello in Virginia, to give a natural feeling indoors." --Christian Science Monitor, 5/18/2004
