although the ypsilanti courier isn't exactly 'the washington post', and only comes out once a week, it is sad to see it bought up as it is the only true 'local paper' we have in ypslianti. It's amazing when you look at historical accounts from a hundred years ago, and they continually refer to different papers that were being produced here. At one point it seems like there were a half-dozen different publications, many catering to specific political parties (I personally think it would be great if Ypsi got another 'Whig' newspaper)! It would be great if different local groups, bloggers, and others could all pitch in and maybe produce a " 'zine- format " local news periodical to fill the gap.

Maybe something like "The Ypsi Paper" a la "The Ann Arbor Paper"? Except minus the dreck (more cartoons by "Anonymous", less confessional first-person junk).

What's your fear now that the Courier has been purchased? Is it a real concern or just a case of larger companies must be bad?

You may try asking your question in a courteous manner and see if your chances of my answering it go up.

Actually, I would be interested in meeting if we found a few people who were serious about starting a local Ypsi maga-zine. It could be fucking cool... Maybe sell them for a quarter a piece, or fifty cents, in all the bars and stores on Michigan Ave. I bet we could sell a few ads too... Actually, I really like this idea. I'll post about it on my site tonight and see if anyone's interesting. It couldn't be any more frequent than a monthly, but I'd be willing to give it a shot... maybe I could commit to publishing four seasonal issues.

It's an untapped market, Mark...I see Crimewave as occupying an entirely different niche from the one I believe you (and I) are thinking of. I also am excited about this idea and would love to meet about it if a few kindred souls can be found.

I'll take that to mean larger companies must be bad.

I like the idea of an Ypsi paper. It could promoted on Ypsi community radio. Er, wait. Nevermind.

Don't put words in my mouth please.

My original comment was hardly rude. I apologize for any unintended grief I caused you though.

My point was the Dexter Leader and Saline Reporter have not sold out to the man. They are still as folksy as ever. The only change the Courier is likely to undergo is a new web page layout that will be in line with the other papers.

i feel that the courier being owned by a parent company definitely could be a very bad thing, mainly because of the fact that such firms generally own a group of papers for several communities, which they fill with a large amount of repetitive ads, general interest articles, etc. which they can put in ALL the papers-with a much smaller amount of space devoted to truly local issues. As for the zine comment i made earlier, and the responses which followed, I'd gladly go along with such an effort if others were genuinely interested. In response to eric's comment/joke about advertising on local radio- please turn your am dial to 1480, which may not be your cup of tea but is certainly a local production (located right on clark road).

good info, brett--thanks--I'll tune in to 1480 and see what they say.

The community radio thing was a snarky comment about excitement that built up for an ypsi internet radio station that quickly died out. Here's hoping the zine excitement does die as quickly.

As far as WSDS goes, it's the only button on my radio. JP is the only reason I drive home at night.
