If Don Cherry doesn't win, the contest will be a sham. The US would be wise to offer Mr. Cherry citizenship and name him the Greatest American.

So who is this mysterious Cherry guy?

Don Cherry (nicknamed Grapes - don't ask), former National Hockey League player and coach, is a commentator on Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) on the CBC. His show is called Coach's Corner and runs between periods. He is extremely outspoken and has little use for hockey players who aren't Canadian or American. His frequently politically incorrect comments caused the CBC to put a seven-second delay on his show. He's also wildly popular among rabid hockey fans.

Ah. Thanks Tom. That means that there are two hockey guys in the "10 Greatest Canadians" lineup...you can guess who the other one is.
But you can't say "nicknamed Grapes--don't ask" and expect me not to ask! So, why Grapes?, I ask. :)

ah hell, Laura, I said "don't ask" because I don't know :) So I had to google him. The closest I can come is that he owns a string of restaurants called "Don Cherry's Grapevine", apparently because every rumor on the hockey grapevine comes to him.

Oh. :) Well, I was braced for the worst, but that's much tamer than I expected (the "hockey grapevine")? Isn't Tim Horton a Canadian hockey guy who has a string of restaurants, too?

Er, was. Horton was the goalie for the Montreal Canadians many years ago. He started a string of donut shops in Canada after he retired (he played when pro athletes had incomes like normal people so he needed a new gig). He died a while ago. Burger King's parent corp (I think) bought the Tim Horton's chain and brought them to the states. So now you can satisfy your maple glazed donut jones without border hassles if you want.

Thanks Tom. I've never had a maple glazed doughnut but it sounds awfully good.

Hey, eh? Knew you'd get me w/ that teaser re: the Macenzie Bros......! Don Cherry is also known for his wild suitcoats...and I mean wild. What about L.M. Montgomery? I think she has sold more books than all other Canadian authors combined.

Montgomery, right! "Anne of Green Gables," yes?

For those of you south of the 49th, Canada is exetremely patriotic in a laid back (read non militaristic) sort of way. I'm a former Michigander from the Ypsi/Ann Arbor area living in Montreal. Canadians watch hockey on Saturdays on "Hockey Night in Canada". Don Cherry's role is to come on in between periods, make borderline racist, sexist, and inflamatory comments that only drunk hockey fans would laugh at (Cherry used to coach for the Bruins). As for Tim Horton, the chain bares his name (which like Hockey is a national symbol of Canada), Wendy's owns them, but he had little to due with the founding of the company. As for this silly contest to vote for your favorite Canadian, well, its a very Canadian (read CBC) thing to do. They do the same for their music award shows too.

Don Cherry is the only genuine voice left in a country obsessed with political correctness. Of course, I could be wrong. I am really drunk right now.

Hi, Ben the Geographer! Thank you for a genuine Canadian comment! I'll have to read up on this Don Cherry fellow...he certainly seems to elicit reactions from people.

Don Cherry is also that guy known for his striking wardrobe, isn't he?

Apparently so, according to my sis...
