thanks Leighton. I don't mean to harass people and I would not be rude to the walmartees...I just really want to know if she's still on the W of H.

I'm embarrarsed that this woman is from West Virginia...she has disgraced her state and her country and I hope she really doesn't think anyone believes that she was ordered to do that! Regardless it was sick and if they told her to jump off a bridge would she do it?

Aside from a disasterous three weeks in Air Force ROTC, in which I failed miserably, I've never been in the military, so I am ignorant of military culture. I keep trying to imagine what kind of sick culture or hideous conditions in Abu Gharaib could lead probably otherwise reasonably decent people to do these things (see the shocking & now-famous Stanford Prison Experiment). On the other hand, I keep coming back to the conviction that, in the final boil-down, everyone is individually responsible for their actions, regardless of the environment...like the soldier who listened to his or her conscience, and, knowing it would probably end his or her military career, sent that CD of photos to the Washington Post.

from a comment on the "Support the Troops" post on Atrios:

"You know... My memory is kinda hazy from the UCMJ classes from basic training, but I distinctly recall that military personnel could disobey an order if it were clearly illegal. I believe the relevant Articles are 90, 91 and 92. In addition, I believe that the UCMJ requires soldiers not to do anything that would be in violation of the Constitution or International Laws that the US has agreed to follow, like the Geneva Convention. For these reasons, "I was just following orders" is NOT a valid defense. It hasn't been since Nuremburg."

The military isn't being run according to the Geneva accords, that's become obvious. After all, when you're the best country in the world, you can do it your way.
