nice try! although it's obviously strange to outsiders, industrial spies really are a problem in situations like this- I know there's been problems at the GM proving ground in western washtenaw county, and security there is very strict because of it. Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to find out more elsewhere (I'm not sure that this security guard's training for the job included a history lesson!)

Yep...the question of whether GM built that building or whether it bought it from the possible former molasses factory is unanswered...I'll have to dig around to find out.
I've heard of the whip-tight security around the proving grounds...and that they do indeed keep things locked down out there. At any rate, I'll post any further info...I'm now captivated by molasses plant questions.

Where's the GM proving grounds? Sylvan Township has Chrysler's proving grounds, about a quarter mile from my parents' house outside Chelsea--is that the one you're thinking of? I thought GM's was up in Macomb County somewhere. I used to know a driver at Chrysler's proving grounds who talked about airplane alerts. Whenever anything airborne was visible from one of the tracks, all of the drivers had to get their vehicles under cover. I believe they actually had a low-altitude no-fly zone, but they were still worried about people in ultralights or small prop planes looking in from just outside the grounds.

Sorry, Murph, I misspoke--indeed, I was thinking of the Chrysler proving grounds you mention. The no-fly-zone info is interesting; thanks.
