Not skeptically enough, I don't think...they should have asked him about what he thinks would happen if he ate any specific kind of food for a month. I also think they shouldn't have let his off-topic Ritalin-bashing go without challenging it.

I think the movie makes a valid point- there ARE a lot of people who do eat fast food on a daily basis, and basically consider it a staple of their daily diet. It's sad but true, and I think the documentary emphasized that all the more. DaveD

My housemate in Pittsburgh ate pretty much nothing but McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy's for the whole 2 years I knew him. He started to branch out to Thai and Subway after he moved in with me. His stomach constantly hurt...among other GI distress indicators that I'm sure none of you are interested in. Oh, and the 4 liters of coke he drank a day probably didn't help either. Yeah eating any kind of specific food for a month might not leave you feeling too hot, but it most likely won't shred your insides like McD's will.

I have mixed feelings and such a strong anti-fast-food bias that it takes an effort to try and see things fairly. I do agree with AAIO that eating one kind of anything isn't a good idea. I made a giant batch of baba ganouj last weekend and have been lazily eating that for several meals in a row...I have to make an effort to eat other stuff just to balance things out. On the other hand, the medical effects described in the documentary ("your liver is turning into pate" said one of his docs) are pretty grisly. Also to be considered is that the moviemaker apparently went in with a bias and has done work in reality TV...so perhaps he knows how to make things a bit flashier than they are. Ultimately I agree with DaveD that it's a shame that for lots of people there isn't ready access to fresh produce or other staples, but there is ready access to cheap fast food...that's why I think community gardens with donated produce, like Ypsi's Adopt-a-Flat program, (contact info in "tulips 04" archive post) are great.
