My father once told me to think of music as a screen door. With digital, at any given moment each little hole in the screen can only be a single color. With analog, on the other hand, each little hole in the screen is a picture unto itself.

It turns out it was Neil Young who said that and my father was plagiarizing him, but it's still a pretty good story.

Yes CDs might eventually degrade from time, but never from use (can't play the grooves out of a CD). Digitized music can last forever in a digital collection and internet ether. Digital is catching up fast in sound quality. That "screen" is getting microscopic (smaller than human perception), with the higher bitrates and sampling rates. Many human ears cannot tell the difference between MP3s and CD's, and no human ear will be able to discern between DVD audio and analog (minus tape his or needle pops). That said, I'd rather record onto a 2" Studer reel than into a computer.

Well, I had hoped that people who know about this would add their thoughts, and I am glad to see both these comments. Brian--that is indeed a good metaphor; I like it--then the "screen getting smaller" note from Leighton gives me more useful info...in the back of my mind I was wondering if I should spring for a turntable one of these days, so this is helpful info.
