If you really want to dig into this issue, ask the HDC and YHF why they took no official position on the destruction of the paper mill. Two organizations dedicated to saving historic Ypsilanti stayed quiet? Not quite what you'd expect from preservationists.

Eric, I really appreciate that tip--that's useful and troubling info--I did kind of wonder why there was no outcry from one historical org., in particular...a paper mill doesn't have the glamour of a victorian house, but in researching the mill last night I found there are a million stories, mostly involving everyday workers, connected to it...it has a high historical value in my eyes. Anyways, you gave me a good lead--thank you.

I bet there's a regular reader of/poster to your blog that has a significant other on the board of one of those organizations that might be able to answer (or ignore) your questions.

If so, then that person would serve a useful purpose in emanating from the woodwork since I'm too clueless to guess who you mean. But I do have a work colleague who's a big fish in the YHF, so I'll try to suss her out on the paper mill. I don't mean to get too obsessed about it all, but I do think it's a worthy historical landmark that could have been revitalized without being destroyed and swept under the "progress" carpet. I have a worried eye on the beautiful brick ruin across the river...I hope they don't deem that a "danger to students" or whatnot.

They should put a new train depot there instead of housing. I don't know anyone that would want to live 6 inches away from a busy railway. But I do kow a lot of EMU students that would hop the train to downtown Ann Arbor. Or, a lot of UM students that would escape the insanely high rent and commute from Ypsi's student ghetto.

Yes...I should check with Jennifer Goulet's office and see about the result of the train-stop proposal, if any.
