Yes, some very good tips- I've been meaning to check out that new dollar store on Washtenaw. Aren't there "environmentally friendly" paper towel products that one can buy? Kleenex? The only one I personally couldn't go along with is the flourescent lighting. I'm an absolute Nazi for good, strong room and lamp lighting, and it's been my experience that flourescent isn't very good. I love halogen for everything; can't help it.

another nice comment--thank you DaveD. I'm sure there are some "environmentally friendly" towels out there...but that's kind of a slippery term, I suppose--as for me I still prefer cloth.
By "the new dollar store on washtenaw" do you mean Dollar Mania or am I overlooking another dollar store? thanks again.

It's the one I saw that opened up in the old HQ/Home Depot store- has a big green sign IIRC. If it opened up that whole retail space, that must be one huge-ass dollar store, and I'll definitely need to check it out. DaveD

Another ignorant question, sorry, DaveD--I'm afraid I don't know where that is...would you please tell me where on Washtenaw it is? thank you.

I've been contemplating the filled-bottle-in-toilet-tank thing for a while, and before I do it, can anyone out there explain why they don't make the tanks smaller? In other words, is the fullness at all functional, and what happens when the tanks are less full -- do they flush less powerfully? I already have newer lower-capacity toilets that don't flush as well as the old fashioned kind (though of course I'd still install them knowing that since the water savings are huge), but they'd get sort of gross if they flushed any more poorly than they do now. Also, isn't there a way to adjust the water level a bit without putting the bottle in the tank?

One thing I do to save energy is sleep with an electric blanket (and a gigantic golden retriever). That way I can turn the thermostat in the house way down at night and still be comfortable. My next step will be to install a thermostat with a timer so that I can have it turn the heat down even lower at night and then have it come back up a bit an hour or so before I get up in the morning. Also, I'll time it to turn the heat down during the day and have it come back shortly before I get home from work. I do this manually now, but sometimes I forget.

The new, HUGE dollar store (and it's sister grocery store with good obscene food) is behind China Chef kinda on the way to the Sec. of state. It's worth the trip.

Anna--I didn't know there was such a thing as timed thermostats; that's a good tip for me since my old one is on the blink and will have to be replaced soon. As for the water level, yes, if you carefully bend the float-bar down so that the float is lower than usual, the tank will stop filling a bit sooner than it would otherwise. I do agree with you though that the new low-flow toilets (I have one) are pretty much at the limit of water necessary to flush.
Leighton, thank you--I'll definitely have to stop by & check it out.

Hey Laura, They sell the timed ones at Home Depot. I understand that if you're at all handy, they aren't tricky to install.

Another tip that might fall in the "duh" category: have your duct work cleaned and your furnace serviced every year. I know full well that I'm supposed to do this, but I forget to do it sometimes. I'm vowing to be better about it.

Very handy tip, Anna; thanks for thermostat info! I bet there's a DIY book in the library that'll show me how to do it; thank you! And I do have to have my furnace cleaned; a good reminder.
