Any tips for making magnolias thrive? We have one in the backyard, but it's really anemic--scrawny and not many blossoms.

Thanks for asking Kristi. Several considerations come to mind. First, sun. Ideally they like full sun with maybe a bit of shade in the afternoon. Heavy shade: no good.
Second, winter protection. Some magnolia species (there are 120) are perfectly hardy in MI, others less so. Depending on the size of the tree, some burlap screening with sticks on the west and north side will protect it from winter wind.
Third, magnolias like moist but well-drained soil that has organic material in it, like a forest floor. If planted in sand or clay, the soil needs to be mulched.
And a fun fact about (the ancient) magnolia: they were around before bees were invented...they were originally pollinated by beetles, and are one of the world's oldest types of trees.

p.s. Kristi, I'd love to hear more about your tree. Any other details about its placement in your yard that might be a factor?

Thanks for the hints, Laura! That winter-protection thing hadn't occurred to me, I'm sorry to say. We do have the soil mulched and the tree is in full sun in the yard, but our backyard soil in general is lousy, with two giant maple trees soaking up everything there is to soak up (at least that's what we've been told). Grass grows and the little hosta garden we planted last year is doing well, but it's always a struggle.

If the hostas are meant as a shade garden, there are lots of other plants that could be mixed in that do well in shade...the classic astilbe, lovely bleeding hearts, ferns, ivy...you name it.
