The developer on this one is a real winner... Steve went to a city council meeting in which they were disappointed that they would be required to erect a fence between the development and the railroad tracks on the site. The structure they're proposing is wood-frame junk too. A council member asked if a taller building could be built to preserve more greenspace, but the developer doesn't want to do that because they'd have to construct a more durable metal frame building if they went any taller. They don't give a rat's ass about Ypsilanti.

For Pete's sake. As if a fence is a major expense item...not putting one up between occasionally inebriated college kids and busy tracks is a recipe for disaster...the developers should have suggested a fence themselves, for that reason. Can't the city *tell* those folks to build a taller building to ensure more greenspace? Sounds like the whole thing's being slapped together as cheaply as possible.

Exactly. Developer hadn't even contacted the railroad before they proposed the building. I'm not sure what the city can require. It seems like the method of site development is the developer submits a proposal and the city says yes or no. Seems like s system where the city decides on requirements and developers submit designs based on those would be more efficient and yeild better designs.

It sure does. And back in the 1860s I doubt they were too fussy about building smack dab next to the tracks but now, for all I know, there may be some restriction like "no building within 100 ft. of track" or what have you...if they're careless enough to not even bother checking something so obvious, then I doubt we've got the best folks for this project.

I, for one, will sure miss the paper mill. Ypsilanti needs more underutilized eyesores. That's what makes Ypsi Ypsi.

Now, Eric, you're even more bilious than usual...something you ate? The building wasn't terribly eyesoreish--no holes or broken windows or what have you. It just kinda sat there.
