I'm curious what their criteria for "locally-owned local" is. Who owns WCBN or WEMU, for example? Isn't 89X independantly locally-owned, and pretty focused on Detroit, for a very different example?

I was also wondering about WCBN and 89X, not to mention WEMU. Seems to me those all qualify as "locally-owned," unless 89X has been swallowed up in the maw of Clear Channel.

89X is owned by a Canadian chain, I believe. WSDS is as local as can be. But in a strict sense, WUOM was right--the other Ann Arbor stations (WTKA, WQKL, WWWW, WAAM, and the little oldies thing on 1290 AM) are all part of national chains. It's quite canny of them to bring this up: they're going after WAAM's disgruntled audience, much as they grabbed a lot of WJR's audience a few years back. I once asked someone over there at whose expense their ratings growth had come, and he unhesitatingly answered "WJR."

Well, I'll be darned. Thanks for the info Jim. Forgive me, though--is WSDS the Ypsi-area country station?

hmm..why wouldn't WCBN be "locally-owned local"? Seems very odd. And Jim--excuse another ignorant question please--WAAM was bought by an Oakland County entity, was it not?

Oops, I forgot about WCBN. (What is the emoticon for embarrassment??) But WAAM was bought by a Dallas conglomerate. They are planning to build a new transmitter in Oakland County, which would further divorce the station from Ann Arbor-area concens. And yes, WSDS is the little country station up on Clark Road. Some syndicated programming (of liberal talk shows, interestingly), but in the mornings it's a survival of another era of radio.

WSDS is as local as can be to Ann Arborites. I wonder if they'll carry the Air America Al franken show?

89X broadcasts Clear Channel content, even if they might be owned by a Canuck corporation. Clear Channel's "X" brand of stations (now seen throughout the nation) actually started with a guy who worked at CIMX and then moved to LA to start their X station. CIMX hasn't been the same since their DJs started a board fire in the early '90s and got canned. One of them does freeform shows out of Mexico that can be heard up through San Diego, but I forget what the hell station it is. js

A survival of another era of radio? Now I'm curious. I'll have to tune in and check it out--thanks for the tip JM. I wonder if I could pester you for the frequency. FM, correct? Just so long as it's not "young country" (ugh). Thanks to Leighton & js for the interesting info. Al Franken wishes he were H. L. Mencken, and so do I...
