Some people prefer cheap and shiny new things to older, durable ones. I think they meant "demolish everything and build new". Maybe they meant that we should paint everything with that fake, gold country club shit though. Hard to say.

I think people mean should take care of our neighborhoods, fix up old buildings, and revive abandoned storefronts.

The Quizno's sign in Depot Town, which I pass by twice every day, is a bit too bright for my tastes.

Do they still have that awful giant banner hanging on the front of Quizno's like they did last week? You'd think there'd be some sort of ordinance against that shit.

I thought they were supposed to cover Quizno's with the same kind of siding as on Dalat so that Depot Town would have a tie to downtown.

Brandon, last I checked, the hideous flapping banner had been removed. I know the place is run by one local guy & one guy from Canton, and more power to them, but...the chain aspect is really jarring in Depot Town. Ugh.
Brian, I prefer to think of the Dalat's siding as...decorative & unique.

Decorative and unique? Really? I can never pick up on sarcasm over the interweb. Dalat used to be a beautiful building in the style of the Kresge building before the disasterous efforts of the 1960s in which buildings had their souls stolen in an effort to "modernize" them. Tell me you are joking. Please.

Maybe he meant more like this.

I can't wait for our first three Starbuckses. (What is the plural of Starbucks?) One in Depot Town. One on Michigan Ave. One in the new Water Street develoment... As much as I love Ypsi, I have a "Three Starbuckses and we're out policy."

Does the fact that the Sidetrack serves Starbucks coffee count as one already?

Brian, I was joking @ Dalat--it's a tad garish. Thank you for the funny picture Steven.
I am alarmed to read Mark's policy...but I can't offhand think of another urban location that is not already Starbucked. And Brian again, I'd say no, the Sidetrack's use of their coffee doesn't count...that doesn't affect the mood of Depot town, although I do wonder why they don't just buy the fair trade coffee at the coop a couple hundred yards away.

I would like to prepare a pre-emptive boycott of all the Starbucks-like stores in Ypsi. Mark, maybe we should put that on our meeting adgenda. (doing that)

When I think 'brighter' I think of what Brian said--taking care of neighborhoods, reviving downtown, restoring old buildings, etc. The word 'gritty' scares me a bit because to me it suggests that empty storefronts and littered sidewalks are a plus. There's gotta be a happy medium in there somewhere.

And the place needs one cafe, whether it's Starbucks or not. Is Ypsi the largest college town in the country without a single functioning coffee house?

Brian - 2004-03-08 11:38:05
Actually, the citizens of Ypsi could do a better job of supporting local busineses. We had our cafe (for quite a few years surprisingly) -- The Mudd House.

The Mudd House closed not for lack of business but lack of owner enthusiasm ...according to some exemployed. Supposedly the coffe shop on Mich Ave is to open soon.

Laura - 2004-03-08 18:45:51
I agree with Kristi...there is a happy medium, but (personal preference) one that doesn't involve franchises.
It is mind-boggling that there is no one functioning coffeehouse in all of Ypsi, as Jim says. The old Liquor is Quicker spot on Cross in the shadow of the water tower would be a good location for a coffeehouse to catch the lunchtime student trade, but L is Q seems suspended in a state of permanent limbo.
Leighton, may I ask where is the new coffeehouse on Michigan Ave.?
