I think the school's peircing policy is stupid, especially when other students haven't been asked to remove nose rings or big earrings. Prohibiting self expression in schools inhibits learning. Schools shouldn't be teaching children to be drones or be expelled. I had a tattoo and a naval ring my sophmore year and that didn't make me a bad kid, though I nearly quit high school because I didn't agree with what was being taught and was taking critism from students and teachers for not thinking like everyone else. If I hadn't been able to attend Community College instead of Thornapple Kellogg High my senior year, I don't think I would have made it. Sounds like she's getting a pro bono lawyer. I would have done the same thing.

I dunno. I tend to veer to the level playing field that school uniforms provide. There's so much crap in high school with who's wearing the coolest what, and the kids who can't afford the Air Nikes are jeered--it's not good. If they're gonna institute a dress code, then I think they should go all the way and institute school uniforms, thereby removing the issue of coolness measured in expensive clothes/piercings/the latest thing and allowing students to not worry about such trivial issues and focus on learning. I personally think self-expression should flower in one's school essays and community service and school leadership and not in superficial bits of metal bought at the mall affixed to one's eyebrows. I am not flaming Hillary by any means, only respectfully presenting my opinion.

Likewise :) You're right that the focus should be on learning rather than superficial bits of metal. The school should learn that lesson. Socio-economic inequality doesn't end when you get out of high school. I think it does kids a disservice to educate them in a sheltered environment without preparing them for real life. If a school has a problem with bullying or teasing, they should disipline the offenders and educate all to be tolerant and accepting of differences rather than forcing conformity on all. Her parents thought she was mature enough to make that decision for herself. What right does the school have to usurp her parents?
