I hate my parents for giving me this name.

Yes, I imagine that would "mark" you for life.

My parents wanted to name my Sean, but they decided that I would go through life in the Midwest as Seen, so they went for Michael, the most popular name the year I was born.

I was gonna be "Jennifer" (ick) until my parents saw the movie Dr. Zhivago. My sister's name is Larissa.

People seem to like my name for online stuff. I was going to be named Alfredrick, ostensibly because it allowed me to choose my own, lame nick name. "Rick" Fred" "Al". I think I dodged a bullet: my sister (Whitney) thought she hit the jackpot, until Ms. Houston came out of Dionne Warwick's ear. My favourite (!) spelling suggestion from a phone interview was L-A-T-I-N, "No! It rhymes with Seighton"

Any name that can be shortened into one or more nicknames automatically makes the child more popular. What can you do with Laura? Nothing. But my sister's family nicknames are Iss ("ees"), Issa, Issabelle, some friends called her Lari...&c. &c. I was always envious of that.

Mom named my brother Jacob for that reason. She didn't think it mattered for girls as much. She was wrong!
