Was it me or did Ron Ashton's art seem really lame?

Yes! He's having fun though... I think I missed my calling.

I agree with Leighton...his works didn't say anything to me. I generally am interested in outsider art, and a crudely rendered artwork can have passion and presence, but Ashton's works didn't. Iggy's painting is also crudely rendered, but it does have presence. I like it. I feel like the figure is warily recoiling from whatever he's viewing. The work has energy. I personally think that Iggy's paintings would be a good investment--they'll only go up in value and actually this is a rare chance to scoop some up, if art investment is of interest to anyone.

Fun is cool. But don't try to sell that kind of artless cool, unless Renee's in the gallery. Iggy's does seem more interesting. None of it is really great, but that defines "outsider" I suppose. A collector friend of ours would probably shun such art *because* these guys are already famous.

I agree; it's not really great, but the name will ensure future profits, if one buys it. I was thinking about driving up there, but I don't think I will. I'm not particularly interested in buying a piece of art just because I think it'll go up in value. Incidentally, Mark Maynard is apparently mounting an art show soon--dates & location needed--I do plan to visit that; looks like there will be some interesting things there. When I subscribed to his very worthwhile magazine Crimewave, he sent the first mag with an interesting and charming drawing which I framed--I like the weird staring blank/horrified/barely-hanging-on eyes in the figures of Mark's art.

Tahnks for the mention, Laura. The show is very small. I've got six pieces in it and Linette has two. All of mine would fit into one of her's though. As for where it is... It's at Leighton's wife's store, Henrietta Fahrenheit. I think everything got hung up over the weekend. I haven't gone to check it out though. Hopefully, it looks OK. I might wander down this evenign and take a gander. If I do, I'll snaps some photos for those of you who are shutins and can't see the show for yourself... Linette and I have yet to write out artist's statements and such for the show. We need to do that tonight.

Wow--cool, thank you, Mark! Definitely a show to see! If I get home at a decent hour tomorrow I'll walk over to HF to check it out. May I ask, how long will the works be there?

I hope you didn't walk over there yesterday. They're closed on Mondays... And Linette's second painting isn't up yet... and we haven't put up our "artist's statements"... As for the show, it should be up until the end of the month.
