Gee, if they had just had an Aquada (http://www.aquada.co.uk), they might have made it to Key West. Maybe you would like one--cross the Huron when and where you wish! But you're right, this is just waiting for an aspiring screenwriter.

Now it's my turn to say--where in heaven's name do you *find* this stuff?? The Aquada is cute as the dickens! I do a lot of mulch-hauling, though, and potting soil and so on--well, it's either one thing or the other I suppose. Potting soil space or aquatibility. I did go to the (interesting) Orphan Car Show in Riverside park a couple years ago--they had a boat-car there, too, that they did dive into the river with--but it was a tad more ungainly than the sleek Aquada. I *would* like one, Jim, you are right--but only if I became knowledgeable enough to do at least some maintenance myself. Probably never have to wash it, if nothing else. A screenplay could be made from this story, indeed. However, I hope I wrote clearly enough to convey that I was awed by this story and most certainly not making fun of it...at any rate. Thanks again Jim.

I can't remember where I saw the Aquada, but there was a minor media flurry when they came out a few months ago. The story about the Cubans reminded me of something else, too. Somewhere there's a group of people, old car enthusiasts, who practice a little spare-parts diplomacy. They go down to Cuba and enjoy the living museum of automotive history that the island is. And they make contacts and send to Cuba spare parts for 1950s American cars that may be difficult to get there. Now, what with the critical role that classic cars play in the culture of Ypsilanti in summer, I wonder if a chapter of this group might get started around here. Unfortunately, I don't remember who these people are or where I read about them, but my strong impression was that they're in metro Detroit.

Both of you gentlemen have me again shaking my head in amazement. The wooden F. is amazing, and beautiful. And Jim, I've seen pictures of the lovely old cars tooling around Cuba--cars so stylish and beautiful, nursed along by enthusiasts, that I wanted to go there to see for myself. I'll do what I can with what feeble powers I have to try and look around for that car-parts group. Once again, thanks to both of you for such meaty and mind-blowing posts--amazing.
