I'm not the Meister, but the original one was "Music from the Morning of the World". If I ever get a turntable again, I'll rip you a copy, but right now it's locked up on vinyl. From the aforementioned public library: The system is unavailable from 1:00 AM to 5:30 AM in order to run borrower notices and file backups. In addition, the system is sometimes unavailable on weekday mornings from 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM for file and disk maintenance and software upgrades.
So I can't check to see if they have it right now. Sheesh!

Yes, that's a good one. There was a series of these released by Nonesuch in the 1970s, and they were tremendous. They had both Balinese and Javanese gamelan recordings--what you heard Sunday was Javanese, with a languid sound and a very subtle control over time that made it perfect as an accompaniment to dance. The Balinese gamelans are fiery and virtuosic. I believe the Nonesuch albums have been reissued on CD, but if you can't find them let me know; I'll check exact titles and/or look around the radio station. Check out WCBN's Indonesian music show, 14,000 Islands, at 8 Sunday nights. I used to engineer it for Margaretha (Menuk) Sudarsih, but now some students are doing it. One in particular, Josie, does a nice job. Lots of good gamelan music, plus examples of Indonesia's insanely creative pop tradition and other non-gamelan folk musics.

Wow. This blog is turning into an "ask the experts" forum. Seriously. I'm amazed. And grateful for such detailed and helpful info from both gentlemen, not to mention no fewer than two offers of research/duping records. I would not dream of asking either of you to waste your time looking for/duping music, but I did soak up the info for further exploration. I have heard CBN's 14,000 Islands a couple of times, but it sounds as though I should listen more, and will do so. Thanks to both of you.

No problem, enjoyable. The A2 public library has a number of recordings; say the word and you can get some mp3's. I didn't get to the concert, but now I'm hungry for some big gongs. When you hit that really big gong with your fist, you can see the edge of it vibrate, while the boss in the center stays the same.

Michael, dumb question: do you mean the library emails mp3s to people? And the gongs were great. The biggest gong was struck only a few times during the concert, and it made this kind of unhearably low note that you felt in your chest instead of really hearing--it was really cool.

No, afraid they're not that progressive. Plus it's illegal. But I don't care, personally, so I'd do it as a favor if you're interested.
Gamelans use a "kolatomic structure", as I remember it, and the big gong can signify the turnaround, where the rhythm starts to repeat. Think 5-7-5-9-3-3-3-BONG-5-7-9-3-3-3-BONG, etc. But I'm sure it's used in more than one way.

See, I knew that was a silly question; thanks for clearing that up. Michael, I cringe at the thought of your wasting even a microsecond to send mp3s--although it is extremely kind of you to offer. I can't do mp3s very well on my slightly arthritic computer, anyways...they come out weirdly choppy, so haven't explored mp3s too much. I was fascinated to learn more about the kolatomic system, with the gong signaling a new cycle. And last, if readers are interested in culture from this general area of the world, there's an Indian "raas" dance show coming to the Michigan Theater on Feb. 14; 763-TKTS for tickets ($10 & $12). That should be spectacularly beautiful too.

And here is another cultural show coming up that the grapevine says is very good--I want to go to this one too:
Feb 13, Friday: Dem Viet Nam (U-M Vietnamese Student Association). 8 p.m. "Hanh Trinh (Journey)" U-M students perform a cultural variety show of traditional vietnamese performing arts, including dances with hats, teacups, and scarves. Michigan Union Ballroom. Tickets $10 (students, $8; members, $5) at the door only. 678-1652.

Well, I could burn a CD copy, too, just to make it even more ill*gal. Whatever you like.
And I thought you had an iMac. There shouldn't be any problem with that machine. Maybe you need to download the new iTunes. or QuickTime. One way or another, mp3's should play fine. And thanks for the tips on the ethnic events.

I do have an iMac...I suppose I'm biased towards CDs, though. Things take forever and a day to download via a dialup modem...and I've packed so much stuff into the imac already that if I install one more program it might...start smoking, or something. Anyways, music sounds so much better on the stereo than on the wee little imac speakers. I think it is very kind of you to offer to burn a CD...I appreciate that nice offer; thank you! I thought about it and I guess in cases like this I kind of like to buy the disc since it gives me the perhaps illusory feeling that at least a bit of the $ is supporting good music...but I do thank you, Michael.

Michael McClatchey - 2004-02-03 16:23:55
I was in the music biz for years, so I don't believe in ripping off musicians. But, in all fairness, no one who played that music is going to get any more money from the disc sales.
But then, I can rationalize almost anything.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-02-03 19:55:38
If it is certain that the musicians will receive no $ from copying the CD, then there is no logical objection to doing so...it sounds as though you know much more about how that works than I do. I would be willing to trade such a CD for a very interesting item from the same neighborhood...some very cool Chinese funeral paper I bought in Malaysia years ago and have been dragging around ever since.

Michael McC. - 2004-02-04 08:56:27
I love fancy paper, and I've always wanted to see one of those Chinese funerals where they burn the paper Mercedes-Benz. It's not necessary for you to trade, but I'll be happy to take a piece of the paper off your hands for a CD. I'll get by the library today and take a couple out. Drop me an email and we'll set up the drop.
Wow, doing something ill*gal again, after all this time - I can hardly wait. 8^)

I have seen cars to burn in pyres as well--it's fascinating..."credit cards," "cell phones," fake checkbooks, you name it.

I love how the ritual keeps up with the new technology. You get a Mercedes and a phone in Heaven.
Have you seen http://www.flying-pig.co.uk? They specialize in paper mechanical automata.

That ritual--new technology phenomenon is fascinating. Have also seen paper-and-wooden-stick dollhouse-sized mansions. Charity Nebbe had a really interesting topic on "Stateside" the other day, about the use of technology (Power Point presentations, &c.) in churches. I was enthralled by so original and interesting a topic, and some very provocative points were raised.

I only heard the first part of that, and it sounded interesting. I loathe PowerPoint so thoroughly, after having to work with monsters created by corporate idiots (200MB files, etc.), that I can't abide using it for anything.
Are you running OS X? I hear their new Apple PowerPoint killer is really good.

I think a little PowerPoint goes a long way. I don't "run" anything--I just push the button and hope that everything works as usual. :) It's OS 9 though.
